About

Why WebBrain?

WebBrain lets you search the Web visually, so you can explore a dynamic picture of related information, instead of searching through long lists of text. WebBrain lets you easily browse the Web and discover what’s out there. WebBrain uses TheBrain technology, which enables effective use of knowledge on the Web, the corporate intranet, and even your personal computer.

Using WebBrain
It’s simple. Click on the topic you are interested in and WebBrain will center itself on your selection, with related topics branching out around it. Click another topic and the process repeats itself. As you click, related Web sites appear at the bottom. Selecting one of these sites opens it in a new window so you can easily get back to your area of the WebBrain. For example, you may navigate the following trail to find Web sites about Camping.

Top>Recreation>Outdoors>Camping

If you know more specifically where you want to go, you can also type the topic in the search box and, after striking the enter key, related categories and Web sites will be listed in the bottom half of the page. WebBrain will move to the most related category in the top half of the page.

WebBrain Basic Overview

Category Positions

Each time you click on a topic all related categories are displayed. As you drill down the WebBrain you’ll notice categories surrounding your selected category. The position of these categories indicates the relationship they have to your selected category.

  1. Topics Above are Parent categories of your search
  2. Topics to the right are Sibling categories-- Other subcategories of the Parent topic.
  3. Topics to the left are Jump categories- Categories that are not subcategories of your path but related to your current topic.
  4. Topics below are Child categories-Subcategories of your topic.

Searching WebBrain

To search WebBrain visually, just click the categories that are related to what you are looking for until you find what you want, then select a Web site from the list below.

To search WebBrain manually, type in a word or phrase and hit return or the go button. Related categories and Web sites will be listed in the bottom half of the page and WebBrain will move to the most related category in the top half of the page. When you select a category from the results, WebBrain moves to that category. When you select a Web site, WebBrain moves to the category containing the site and opens the site in a new window.

FAQ

Why do I get blank squares  when I go to some of the "world" subtopics?

This is probably because you're looking at foreign language topic, and your JVM doesn't have the proper font installed.  There are two steps you must take to use locale-specific fonts, such as the Thai font, on an English environment platform.

Step 1: Install the Font

First, you must install the locale-specific font (for example, Thai, Russian, or Arabic font) to your system. For Windows platform users, Microsoft delivers these fonts free with the NT4.0 installation CD. Or, you can download these fonts from the Microsoft World Wide Web home page. Solaris users must contact SunSoft to request the fonts for Solaris environments.

Step 2: Copy the Font

Once you have installed the fonts on your system, copy the font description that you are interested in to font.properties. The easiest way to add one font is to rename the font.properties.<locale> file to be the new font.properties file. The locale symbol represents the font name that you are interested in. No editing is required when you replace font.properties with font.properties.<locale> because font.properties.<locale> is a superset of font.properties. These are the locale symbols that specify the different font properties files:

NOTE: If you’re running Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, you’ll notice that it doesn’t have a font.properties file.  In this case, you will need to add the specified font to windows, (under windows 2000 you can just go to the Control Panel, Click on Regional Options, and simply add a check mark next to the language you would like to add.)
